I got my aura photographed and here’s what I learned

Scrolling through Instagram you may have come across, tiny polaroid photo portraits with bursts of color over them. Thinking these were just filters overlaid over the photo? Nope. Using special equipment the photographer can capture the electromagnetic energy that comes off a person’s body during the 3-minute photography session and transform those readings into a colorful photo.

These vivid photos don’t just highlight an individual's exterior beauty but the colors represent your “Aura”. This old but new trend is called “Aura Photography”. Popular in the 1930s and 1970s it has had a resurgence in the last few years.

At this point, you are probably thinking Jewel “What’s an aura?”

What is an Aura?

An aura Is a representation of the energy or magnetic vibrations your body gives off and is typically described as the colors around the human body. Your aura is typically a positive trait that can provide insight and direction into an individual's spiritual, emotional and physical life. Each color has its own representation to help you to a better understanding of self-awareness. Auras are also known as chakras. If you are a yogi like me, you’ve probably heard of the term chakra.

My experience getting my aura photograph and read

The first question I got from my dad when I told him I went to have my aura photographed was “Why did I do it?” My response was” I curious to see what the reader had to say and it was a cool experience.”

I didn’t tell any of my friends or family I was going to have my aura photographed because I didn’t want any judgment or unsolicited advice. This was my experience and not anyone else's to experience. Kinda like the philosophy “Ask for forgiveness, not permission”. Now let's get on to where I tell you about my experience.

I arrived at the outdoor Artist and Fleas market at Ponce City Market just in time to make my 11:45 a.m. Saturday appointment to find the Aura photography stand. Upon arrival, I was greeted by two women who worked for the photography studio. They quickly described the process and guided me to their pop-up lightroom/photography booth. I sat down in front of the camera and placed my hands on two metal boxes with handprints outlined on them (They look like the boxes you have to place your hands on when being fingerprinted for a government or finance job). Then you look directly at your reflection in the camera’s viewfinder and the photo is taken and you wait for it to develop, which takes about 1-2 minutes in total.

Once my photo was done processing the reader then walked you through what the meaning of the colors in the portrait means.

“Your aura photograph is showing lots of rich blue and purple hues”, says the aura reader as we examine my photograph.

The purple and blues she says mean I have an intuitive, psychic, empathic, expressive, nurturing, non-judgmental, loyal, trustworthy, visionary, supportive, inspiring and playful energy. Which is all pretty spot on with who I am and represent. In addition to the colors in the photo, there are other things she pointed out in the photo reading that hinted at my empathic and intuitive side.

I come from a long line of empaths and intuitive thinkers and have most recently started to see that side of my aura. In the last couple of years, I’ve had many dreams and spotted angel numbers that have forewarned me about positive and negative changes coming to life. Most recently I’ve seen the same angel numbers daily every day and have wanted some clarity around that. So it was nice to get some additional guidance today that I should continue to keep notice of those dreams and numbers that I’m experiencing.

Here’s a quick guide on the aura color descriptions based on some colors you may see in your photo:

Orange: Passionate, Self-Aware, Strong, Willful, Courageous

Yellow: Optimistic, Joyful, Confident, Enthusiastic, Generous, and Whimsical

Green: Loving, Compassionate, Peaceful, Nurturing, Connected to Nature, Connected to People

Blue: Expressive, Empathic, Supportive, Intuitive, Loyal, Trusting, and Sensitive

Purple: Intuitive, Playful, Visionary, Non-Judgemental, Unconventional, and Inspired

Pink: Loving, Caring, Self-Aware, Generous, and Cheerful,

White: Inspiring, Wise, Energized, Positive, and Protective

The aura reader can go into how the anatomy of the colors represents your personality.

Just a reminder that everyone’s aura is different and no one person’s aura is the same. Each reader may interpret them differently. Also, our auras change as we continue to transform as people. I could have another aura photography session 6 months from now and my aura could have changed. And aura readings are not like Tarot readings the aura reading contained no predictions of the future.

Whether you are a believer or not, an aura portrait is a pretty way to see yourself photographed in a new light. You can only get so much out of an experience if you are open to it. And you are left walking away with a gorgeous photo.
